After over a year of soft launches and beta testing, The Sims Mobile released as a free to play mobile game on the 6th of March 2018. It can be downloaded for both iPhone and Android smart devices.
While available as a free download, The Sims Mobile operates on the popular "freemium" price model. This means that micro-transactions are instinctively tied into the gameplay of the app and are heavily incentivised.
The Sims Mobile requires a constant internet connection to the EA servers in order to actively play. However, due to the game's wait mechanics, it is possible to start activities in the game which will then continue while a device is offline.
The mobile version of The Sims is fundamentally different to the PC version, focusing more on a single-player structured narrative. Items and construction of homes have been scaled back considerably and placed behind pay walls, resulting in a more casual mobile game.
While there is no dedicated multiplayer mode, individual Sims can meet and interact. This is started by an individual starting parties by spending in-game currencies. Multiple Sims can then talk and perform social functions alongside specific party-exclusive actions.
Unlike the traditional Sims releases, the mobile version has no cheat menu. The only methods to earn in-game currencies and items are through successfully completed tasks or via purchase of items with real world payments.
Energy is the basic unit for Sims. Each task in-game takes a real world set amount of time. This can be anything from a few minutes to several hours. Energy can be used to speed up a task, but a Sim without energy cannot perform anything. Certain objects and micro-transactions can speed up energy regeneration.
Progress in The Sims Mobile is primarily accomplished through completion of set objectives and tasks. This can be anything from working a job, interacting with another Sim or arranging a room. Each tasks awards a set amount of currency or items, alongside experience points for levelling up.
The Sims Freeplay received criticism from fans due to its freemium gameplay and time-based tasks. The Sim Mobile, while an advance in terms of content and overall appearance, continues in much the same way mechanically.
While numerous methods of hacking The Sims Mobile to provide extra in-game cash and currencies are advertised online, none actually work. These generally require a user to watch ads or provide access to their device, often for malicious purposes.
